Visitors to Amsterdam can enjoy watching or taking part in a huge variety of sports. Football is very popular in the Netherlands and Amsterdam is home to the Ajax, one of Europe's top clubs. The club has a large and loyal fan base in the city and games attract large, noisy crowds.

Cycling is another popular activity in Amsterdam and bicycles can be hired from many places throughout the city, while Amsterdam also has excellent facilities for many other sports such as athletics , tennis, horseback riding and even golf.

However, due to the nature of the city - much of it reclaimed, space is at a premium, so open sports facilities here are much less available.

Close to the city, Vondel Park is a charming place for a jog or rollerblading and its popular with locals in the summer. A little further out, southwest of the city, is the much larger Amsterdam se Bos which has facilities such as tennis courts and hockey pitches, as well as riding trails and paths.
