The Spanish are passionate about football and Barcelona is no exception, with the sport being a local obsession and talking point in many of the city's bars and cafés. The city's team, Barcelona Futbol Club, or El Barça, plays regularly at Camp Nou Stadium. Football is by far the most popular spectator sport, although American football has a following, while bullfights remain an important part of Spanish culture, with Barcelona boasting two rings at either end of the Fran Via de les Corts Catalanes.

The 1992 Olympic Games were held in Barcelona and were advantageous for the city's sporting facilities, which received a massive boost and rejuvenation. This goes for both spectator and participant facilities, with decent leisure facilities offering well-equipped gyms, swimming pools and an array of fitness classes dotted throughout the city. Meanwhile, Barcelona's beautiful surrounding countryside offers many outdoor sporting activities including sailing, cycling and swimming.
