Canberra is a major centre for both spectator sports such as rugby, Aussie rules football and soccer and for the large number of fitness enthusiasts in the area. The Australian Institute for Sport is located in Canberra and it is here that many of the country's top athletes prepare for the Olympics and other major sporting events.

The Canberra Brumbies of Australia's Rugby Union is one of the city's proudest teams and regular rugby games are played at Canberra's Bruce Stadium. The city's rugby league team is the Canberra Raiders, who also play at Bruce Stadium. Cricket is also popular in Canberra and the Manuka Oval cricket stadium hosts many important matches from October to March.
