Visitors to Edinburgh can watch or take part in a wide range of sports and activities. Football is a very popular spectator sport here and the two biggest clubs in Edinburgh are Heart of Midlothian, known as Hearts, and Hibernian, known as Hibs.
Other popular sports include rugby - where you can catch the national side at Murrayfield during the winter, cycling and curling, while horse racing takes place at a number of courses near Edinburgh. The city has excellent facilities for many other sports including tennis and golf, and the Midlothian Ski Centre in the south of Edinburgh has the largest artificial ski slope in Europe.
The weather may not always be suitable in Scotland for outdoor sports but one very Scottish pursuit is curling, which is played on ice and resembles the game of lawn bowls except the pace of the 'puck' is controlled by sweeping the ice. Scotland won the gold at the sports first Olympic appearance in 2002. There are several indoor venues where you can witness this bizarre sport.
Golf is a sport strongly associated with Scotland and the course at St Andrew's is within easy driving distance of the city, but there are more than a dozen courses in the area.
Horse racing is another popular activity locally with at least 5 courses near Edinburgh. Musselburgh Horse Racing Course in Linkfield road is the nearest and meets are held here almost weekly in the summer.
Indoor rock climbing is an unusual and burgeoning sport that is enjoying popularity at venues across the city and can be enjoyed year-round.
