Italians are passionate about football and this is just as much so in cultural Florence as elsewhere in the country. A. C. Fiorentina was Florence's much loved team and they were once of the top teams in Italy's Premier League, having won two Italian Championships, five Italian Cups, one League Supercup and one Cup Winners Cup; however, due to financial struggles the team changed their name to Fiorentina Viola and have had to begin competing at Serie C2. Match tickets can be purchased at the Toto booth in the Piazza della Republica. Aside from football, the other major sporting event on Florence is the annual marathon.

Florence's beautiful surrounding countryside offers many outdoor sporting activities including golf, fishing, tennis, cycling and swimming - both off the Tuscan coast and in open-air pools. There are dozens of gyms and sport centres dotted throughout the city offering comprehensive sporting facilities for those looking to tone up their muscles through aerobics or weightlifting among other activities.
