The city of Liverpool has a proud sporting heritage. It is famous around the world for its two great football clubs, Liverpool and Everton, as well as the Aintree Racecourse which hosts many popular horse races including the Grand National. Other popular spectator sports in Liverpool include cricket and rugby.
Getting to actually see either Liverpool or Everton in action will require some forward planning (booking on the internet or through a sports tour agent) or deep pockets. However, Anfield is considered by football fans to be a mecca and even when games aren't being played its worth a visit to follow the history of this famous and historic team at the museum on site. The fans merchandise shop is also a big drawcard.
Liverpool has superb facilities for a wide range of sports and activities including boating, water sports, athletics, tennis, golf, angling and horseback riding.
West Kirby Marine lake is a popular summer venue near Wirral if you enjoy watersports. A big Heatwave Leisure pool is a winter option that's popular with the kids, located in Stockbridge village.
In Runcorn, nearby, you will even find an indoor dry ski slope. There are also at least 10 major fitness centres in the city centre and many more smaller council run ones in the suburbs.
