Madrid has its fair share of spectator sports and between March and June it's possible to catch championship events including tennis, football and cycling. Spain is especially passionate about football and the city is home to two rival teams, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid. World famous Real can be watched at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, while Atlético play at Estadio Vicente Calderón.
Traditionally, Madrid is also home to bullfighting and has an architecturally impressive bull ring, the Plaza de Toros Monumental de Las Ventas, which is the largest of its kind on the planet. The bullring still hosts fights and it's possible to watch one in the bullfighting season, which runs throughout the summer from mid-May.
Active sporting enthusiasts will feel at home in Madrid, with amenities dotted throughout the city where visitors can participate in a range of sports including swimming, tennis, squash, bowling and horseback riding. The proximity of the city to the countryside also makes for a myriad of outdoor activities such as golf, watersports and fishing.
