Melbourne is home to numerous superb sporting facilities and popular spectator sports include Australian Rules Football (AFL), cricket, soccer and rugby among others. Victoria is the centre of Aussie Rules Football and home to at least five major teams in the ARL. For a true blue Aussie experience try to catch one of these games at the famed MCG (Mebourne Cricket Ground) during the southern winter.

ARL teams in the Melbourne area include Richmond, Collingwood and St Kilda, each with their own loyal fan bases. The historic Melbourne Cricket Ground hosts international test matches during the summer, while Melbourne also boasts excellent facilities for water sports, golf, tennis and many other sports.

Each year Melbourne hosts the Australian Open Tennis Championships and the Australian Formula One Grand Prix, which have become huge events in the city's sporting calendar. Both occur in early March within weeks of each other and the Grand Prix is a permanent feature of Albert Park near St Kilda.
