Information about Sport in Minneapolis
The Minneapolis Lakers were formed in 1947 from the recently relocated Detroit Gems. Attracting some major star players and combining local university talent, the Lakers were the champions of the 1947-48 season and later became one of the main forces within the early NBA league. Today, there is no Minneapolis Lakers since the team relocated again to become the famous Los Angeles Lakers.However, the Twin Cities do possess a professional American football team. Formed in 1976 and named the Minnesota Kicks, the very average side folded in 1981. After a number of years of playing the indoor league, a new team emerged as Minnesota Thunder in 1994.
