Information about Sport in Sydney - Sydney, New South Wales (NSW), Australia
Sydney hosted the Olympics in 2000 and boasts numerous world-class sporting facilities. Given its location on the coast, water sports enthusiasts are especially well catered for here, with excellent sailing, diving, swimming and surfing opportunities available.
Cricket, rugby and Australian rules football are popular spectator sports in Sydney and attract large crowds at the city's stadiums. The Sydney Cricket ground is a good place to see the perennially successful and (almost!) unbeatable Australian Cricket team.
Aussie rules football is less popular in New South Wales and for that dinkum Aussie experience you may need to go to Melbourne, but rugby is a huge event and to see the Wallabies in action at Stadium Australia, where the 2003 Rugby World Cup final was held, is an unforgettable experience - especially when they are playing their arch-rivals New Zealand and South Africa.
Other popular sports include golf, tennis and angling. Then there is surfing and you can even take lessons at Bondi beach. Sailing enthusiasts might be lucky and get to crew on a day's sailing in the harbour if you hang around the marina at Rushcutter's Bay.
