Wellington offers a fine array of sports and outdoor activities including cycling, hiking and various water sports. There are several excellent cycling paths in and around the city, particularly near the waterfront district as well as on Mount Victoria. Wellington's many beaches offer a wide range of water sports including scuba diving, sea kayaking and surfing.

The two most popular spectator sports in Wellington are cricket and rugby, each with their own excellent grounds. Located at Kent Terrace in the Courtenay Place district, the Basin Reserve Cricket Ground holds national and international test matches during the summer months, while the Westpac Trust Stadium in the Thorndon region is home to the Hurricanes, one of the top rugby clubs in the country. The Stadium is also home to the highly popular Telecom International Rugby Sevens Tournament in February.
